PMOS
Explore insights on PMOS, which impacts 1 in 10 women. Fempower Health’s resources from today’s experts provide information on symptoms, treatment options, and management strategies for polycystic ovary syndrome.
What is Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome (PMOS)?
Affecting about 1 in 10 women, PMOS (Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome) (formerly PCOS or Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome) is a reproductive hormone imbalance that can cause problems in the ovaries. In a healthy menstrual cycle, the ovaries produce the egg that is released each month. With PMOS, however, the body creates excess androgens (male sex hormones), preventing the egg from developing or releasing as it should during ovulation.
Sometimes, cyst-like follicles grow in or around the ovaries in patients with PMOS. Although the name (“cystic”) implies the presence of cysts, not all women diagnosed with PMOS have them. Similarly, the presence of ovarian cysts alone does not automatically mean someone has PMOS.
What Specialist is Best for PMOS?
Given PMOS is a complex condition that requires further research in medicine today, it is important to have the right team during treatment. PMOS specialists often suggest seeking care from:
Doctor (Typically an Endocrinologist):
Helps you with a diagnosis and treatment plan. After diagnosis, searching “PMOS specialist near me” might direct you to someone who understands this process.
Nutritionist/Dietitian (Who Works with PCOS Patients):
Ensures you are on a proper “PMOS diet” to manage symptoms, as nutrition and food sensitivities can impact severity.
Mental Health Professional:
Supports you through the mental health impact many face with PMOS, since hormones and physical symptoms can bring up feelings of distress.
Dermatologist:
If you suffer from hirsutism (excess hair growth), your dermatologist can provide suggestions and support.
“Although it cannot be cured, PMOS symptoms can be managed. A lot of women pull through and find ways to experience little to no symptoms, as long as they find a treatment that works for them.”
